Adductor Magnus

Adductor Magnus is the largest groin muscle and is one of the two long adductor muscles the other being the gracilis.

Anatomy of the Adductor Magnus

The adductor magnus is supplied by the Obturator artery.

It is usually described as having two parts, hamstring and adductor parts.

The Adductor Part

Innervated by the posterior branch of obturator nerve it arises from the ramus of the pubis are short, horizontal in direction, and is inserted into the rough line of the femur leading from the greater trochanter to the linea aspera, medial to the gluteus maximus.

The Hamstring Part

Innervated by the sciatic nerve is composed principally of the fibers arising from the tuberosity of the ischium. It forms a thick fleshy mass consisting of coarse bundles which descend almost vertically, and end about the lower third of the thigh.

Functions of the Adductor Magnus

Depending on the adductor magnus head in use, it has the following functions:

  • Adductor head: Adducts and flexes hip
  • Hamstring head: Extends hip

The main function of the adductor magnus is to serve as a powerful adductor of the thigh, along with being able to extend the thigh.

Every time you lift your second leg into a car, you are using the adductor magnus muscle.

Some of the best exercises to strengthen the adductor magnus muscle include long adductor stretch, inner thigh machine and hip adduction using a resistance band

As with the other adductor muscles, groin strains are common injuries to the adductor magnus muscles. This normally occurs without a thorough warm-up or in individuals with chronically tight or weak adductor muscles.
