Algae

What is Algae?

Algae has been considered as a delicacy in China and Japan. It was only in the 60’s that algae was proposed as a super food able to solve hunger and nutrition problems. It is now considered as a highly nutritious health food.

Algae supplements provide the body with protein, carbohydrates, carotenoids, amino acids, vitamins and trace minerals. It's especially beneficial for vegetarians or individuals suffering from malnutrition. There are different types of Algae and these include blue green- algae, Chlorella, Red marine algae, Carrageenan, Agar, Alginates and Green Algae.

Klamath Lake blue-green algae, come from the fresh-water Klamath Lake in Oregon and is a rich source of vitamin B12 and all 22 amino acids. Spirulina, another fresh water blue-green algae, is about 65-71% protein and contains 8 essential amino acids and an abundant amount of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid.

Chlorella is close in comparison to spirulina; it has less protein, but contains twice as much nucleic acid and chlorophyll. Red marine algae is a rich source of vitamins, minerals, proteins, complex carbohydrates, enzymes, essential fatty acids, fiber and trace elements.

Algae stimulate the immune system, by increasing white blood cell count and promoting the growth of healthy colonic flora. Algae supplements are ideal for improving overall health. Algae are also beneficial for treating anaemia, infections, fatigue, obesity and toxicity.

Blue-green algae contain amino acids, vitamins, and trace minerals that tone up the immune system, raise energy levels, and improve general health. Their high chlorophyll and phytochemical content make them effective antioxidants that help prevent cell damage and aid detoxification in the body. Compared to other protein sources, algae are low in fat and high in fibre.

Beta-Carotene contained in Algae is known to help fight particular types of cancer and cardiovascular diseases and phycocyanin is believed to strengthen the immune system and fight cancer.

Side Effects and Warnings of Algae

One of the biggest issues against the use of Algae for dietary supplements purposes is the lack of the proper research on its efficacy. In fact some physicians claim that the use of Algae is just a placebo effect. You should seek advice from your medical practitioner before using this or other supplements.

Cases of nausea, vomiting, fever, chills and malaise have been found with those who take Algae supplements. Some algae can also produce toxins harmful to your health. In this case you should be very careful of the source of the algae used in your dietary supplement.
