Anterior Deltoid Head

The anterior deltoid head is one of three heads of the deltoid structure, and is located at the front of the shoulder.

Anatomy of the Anterior Deltoid Head

The anterior deltoid head originates from the anterior border and upper surface of the lateral clavicle.

Functions of the Anterior Deltoid Head

The anterior deltoid is involved in shoulder abducted when the shoulder is externally rotated. The anterior deltoid is weak in strict transverse flexion but assists the pectoralis major during shoulder transverse flexion / shoulder flexion (elbow slightly inferior to shoulders).

Exercises for the Anterior Deltoid Head

The front deltoid head is effectively targeted by pressing movements. Bench pressing will recruit the front deltoid to aid the lift during transverse flexion.

Overhead pressing movements will provide great stimulation, which are more commonly used to primarily and effectively target the deltoids. These shoulder pressing exercises can be viewed above in the exercise section.
