Are fruits just Empty Calories?

Get serious! It Surprises me that anyone would even think of asking whether fruits were just empty calories is something my mind cannot accept. Everyone, and I mean everyone, knows that eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day is extremely important for maintaining a good health. It does not only make you look good by trimming your body of any excess weight but also makes one feel good as it gives a tremendous boost of energy to you body, making you feel more active. Not only that it contains numerous vitamins and minerals that keep diseases like cancer, blindness, inflammation of the intestines, and tumors, to name a few, at bay.

People all around the globe are becoming increasingly aware of what they put inside their bodies. Nutrition is one of their key concerns while shopping for groceries. Hence, it is no surprise that the interest in fruits and vegetables has also seen an upward movement. There is no doubt that a diet rich in fruits and veggies is healthy for us due to the nutrients present in them but their exact composition is still not known. There are groups of people that call themselves fruitarians that swear by their fruits and have proven that humans can live off a healthy life by consuming just fruits.

Here is a list of some minerals and vitamins contained in fruits and vegetables:

Vitamin A

  • Oranges, carrots, mangos, cantaloupes, apricots and tomatoes.

Vitamin C

  • Citrus fruits and juices, kiwi fruit, strawberries, cantaloupe and tomatoes

Folate

  • Oranges

Potassium

  • Bananas, plantains, apricots, prunes, oranges

Amino Acids

  • Bananas, tomatoes, cucumbers
  • Potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots

Figs

Fig is used in the curing of hemorrhoids and some types of cancer like skin cancer. It is recommended for patients suffering from asthma and diabetes. It also does wonders for nausea, headache, fevers and whooping cough.

Apple

Apple improves the functioning of kidneys and makes it easier for kidneys to perform their activities. Its also recommended in digestion problems.

Apricot

Apricots supply the body with an increased flow of blood. It also aids in the growth of hair.

Banana

Good for heart and muscular system, protects from diarrhea.

Cherry

Cherries are loaded with nutrition. Relieves pain, especially headaches, improves mental functions and cuts the risk of heart attack.

Grapefruit

It strengthens immune system, helps in cough and flu, decreases cholesterol.

Even the most cynical of people would not help but be impressed by the nutritional value of fruits after all the above information. There is a lot more to this type of food than meets the eye or has been discovered. So eat your five servings of fruits and veggies a day so you don’t have any regrets later.
