Q. Do I need to hire a personal trainer? It seems very expensive but I really want to train hard.
A. Hiring a personal trainer is a good idea. As long as you ensure that the person is properly trained and has a good track record, then you can go ahead and hire one. You are right that it may a bit expensive for some and that is why we at Miracles for Men find it is a good idea to make socialise in the gym and get training partners. It is safer for you and a good working partner is a great source of training motivation.
Q. I am still new in weight training and was wondering, is there a good workout before and after my training program?
A. Miracles for Men encourage a warm up and a cool down before and after your training program. A warm up that includes light aerobics and lifting lightweights before the main exercise is highly recommended. A cool down that includes light stretching, and slower versions of your main exercise will greatly improve your recovery rate, reduce soreness and avoid injury.
Q. Is there an exercise I should avoid as a female?
A. No! At Miracles for Men, we do not know of any exercise that discriminates due to gender. As long as you have ensured your personal safety, medical conditions, and personal capabilities, weight training is an equal opportunity activity.
Q. Miracles for Men please help me. I have been training everyday for about 3 hours a day and do not see any results yet. I know I am training well since I am always sore. Why is it that 3 months later my results are not as good as my friends?
A. You are simply over training. You might think that the many hours you are spending in the gym are helping you but training every day for more than 1 hour is over training. Soreness does not mean that you had a perfect workout; it might mean that you never allowed your muscles to rest adequately and might not have stretched them after the workouts. Reduce your training periods and take adequate rest.
Q. I am in my 50’s and heard that weight training will not help me as muscle gain. What should I do other than giving up?
A. Instead of giving up, Miracles for Men will encourage you to start weigh training. Muscles will respond to resistance to grow in mass. Muscles do not know what age one is. Though as you grow older, muscle gain will be slower, you will still be able to benefit from weight training at whatever age you start.
Q. There is a local gym near my home that I want to join. However, it is too expensive for me. I don’t know what to do as I know they have the best gym around and the other gyms don’t look like places I can increase my muscles.
A. It is not the gym that makes the muscles; it is your attitude and weight training goals. Expensive gyms might be good, but not necessarily the best. You need to get the right training attitude and use what you have to maximum effect. I don’t think there was a multibillion-dollar gym in Australia for Arnold Schwarzenegger to train in.
Q. What are free weights?
A. Free weights are weights that must be moved and stabilized by you. They include dumbbells, barbells etc and there is no machine attached to them to stabilise the weights.
Q. How do I know I am doing an exercise correctly?
A. The first place to find out is in your own gym. In most good gyms, you have instructions with training equipment on how to use the equipment. Miracles for Men suggest that you not only read these instructions but also ask those who are in the gym how to do a particular exercise. Most gyms have someone who is able to answer all your questions on training exercises and if you can afford it, a personal trainer too.
Q. I am still very new in training and was wondering if Miracles for Men has a suggestion on what is the right weight for me to start with.
A. Since we don’t have any more information other than you are still new, we can’t offer detailed advice on the right training weights to start with. Speak to your physician to figure out if weight training is safe for you. Then start with low weights and gradually increase on them as you get to learn how your body works. For a new weight trainer, even very low weights can be helpful as your muscles are not used to it.
