Astaxanthin
What is Astaxanthin?Astaxanthin is classified as a xanthophyll, which is a carotenoid pigment, and can be found in microalgae, yeast, salmon, trout, krill, shrimp, crayfish, crustaceans, and the feathers of some birds.
This potent carotenoid, available in supplement form, can improve endurance and reduce recovery time after exercise and is being sought after by professional and amateur athletes alike.
Astaxanthin is most commonly used as an antioxidant and may be beneficial in decreasing the risks of certain chronic diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Astaxanthin may also be effective in carpal tunnel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, muscle strength and endurance, high cholesterol (LDL oxidation), musculoskeletal injuries, and male infertility.
Astaxanthin has been used as a feed supplement and food colouring additive for salmon, crabs, shrimp, chickens, and egg production. Astaxanthin supplements are powerful antidotes to the cell damage that strenuous exercise can cause.
Scientists believe that astaxanthin protects the skeletal muscles from damaged inflicted by ROS produced by physical exercise. Astaxanthin also increases the metabolism of lipids (fats), which is important in energy production, and plays a part in reducing inflammation by inhibiting factors (e.g. pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators) that cause it. The supplement has also been found to cause a significant increase in peripheral blood flow.
Many research studies have found that astaxanthin can increase endurance, reduce muscle damage, and improve lipid metabolism. It has also been shown that it can also help relieve eye fatigue, reduce high blood pressure and assist with weight loss efforts.
Side Effects and Warnings of Astaxanthin
There is little evidence and study to show that Astaxanthin has any side effects. However, as with every other dietary supplement, you should seek medical advice before using it.
