The Diary - August 2008
We do not need to tell you that August 8th, 2008 at 8pm was the beginning of the Beijing Olympics.
Miracles for Men were at hand to witness probably the best opening ceremony in any Olympic games. The fireworks were something to behold and the atmosphere at the stadium was exhilarating.
We had our own pet competitions that we wished to witness from weight lifting, track and field and swimming and the competition was better than we had expected.
Weightlifting at the Beijing Olympics
Miracles for Men have a special affinity to weight lifting. Though dodged by doping scandals even before the start of the games, we were in for some of the best performances ever witnessed in the sport.
Who can forget what Andrei Aramnau of Belarus did in the 105kg category? Three world records on August 18th is no small feat for such a pint sized fellow. He lifted 200kg in the snatch, 236kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 436kg. He basically lifted four times his weight in one competition all world records.
For the title of the strongest man in the world, Matthias Steiner of Germany motivated himself to beat Vikros Scerbatihs and Evgeny Chigishev to shock the whole world.
Swimming at the Olympics
You do not need Miracles for Men to tell you that Michael Phelps won 8 gold medals in the Olympic swimming pool. We have written before about his quest to break Mark Spitz’s record gold haul in the Olympics.
This time Miracles for Men were at hand to witness the impossible.
Track and Field at the Olympics
If what was going on at the swimming pool was record breaking, what was going on at the track was something that will live in our memories for a long time. There were a lot of complaints about the terrible smog in Beijing but it seems not to have affected the athletes in the track.
In probably the biggest stage in track and field, we really could not decide which our best performance was. From Kenenisa Bekele providing superhuman speeds as he won the 10,000 meters to Pamela Jelimo just decimating the 800 meters women’s field in only her sixth race, we knew it was enough to make this one of the most successful track meets.
However, we are still in shock and wonder at what Usain Bolt did. If you did not see the 100 meter final then, you should go to YouTube. However, for Miracles for Men, the 200 meters was what we had been waiting for. Michael Johnson’s record was probably one of the hardest to break and he did it in style, leaving everyone else for dead!
We have to say that this Olympics was by far the best that Miracles for Men have been a part of and we are definitely going to be around when the London Olympics come calling.
Kindest Regards
The Miracles For Men Team
