Betaine

What is Betaine?

Betaine is used to treat a lack of or defect in certain enzymes that cause too much homocysteine in the blood and urine. It removes the extra homocysteine from the body.

Betaine HCL is a non-essential nutrient and a source of hydrochloric acid-a naturally occurring chemical in the stomach that breaks down fats and proteins. It is necessary for the metabolizing (absorption) of protein, calcium, vitamin B12, and iron.

Betaine HCL treats many conditions including high homocysteine levels (causes severe heart disease). It may also be beneficial in treating anaemia, asthma, gall stones, indigestion and heart burn.

Other conditions that could be improved with Betaine HCL supplementation include, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid problems, tic dolorous, arteriosclerosis, diarrhoea, allergies and rhinitis (inflammation of the nose).

Betaine HCL may also prevent osteoporosis, asthma, eczema, and chronic hives.

Side Effects and Warnings of Betaine

Along with its needed effects, Betaine may cause some unwanted effects. It is very important that you seek the advice of your medical practitioner before taking this or any other diet supplements.

If you are pregnant, or breast feeding, you should always seek medical advice.  However, check with your doctor if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome: Diarrhoea; nausea; stomach upset

A common side effect is that Betaine may cause a body odour. Children, pregnant, and nursing mothers should not take Betaine HCL because it is not really known if it is safe for them. People with severe kidney or liver disease should also avoid this.
