Biotin

What is Biotin?

Biotin is one of eight essential vitamins that comprise the B-complex. Like all of the members of the B-complex, biotin plays an important role in energy metabolism, acting as a coenzyme in chemical reactions that produce energy. Also known as vitamin H, it is a water soluble vitamin that is also considered part of the B-complex family of vitamins.

It is naturally available in many foods including liver, cauliflower, salmon, carrots, bananas, soy flour, cereals, yeast and other foods. Most people who eat health foods do not have a biotin deficiency, since it is readily available in many different foods, but if you eat the typical packaged foods you may be lacking this vitamin, and many other nutrients.

Biotin is a necessary vitamin for the growth and health of your body. It aids in the converting of fatty acids and glucose into fuel for the energy you need to go about your day. If you feel run down you may be low on this B vitamin.

It also metabolizes amino acids and carbohydrates and helps to produce certain enzymes that your body needs for normal functioning. It plays a part in keeping your sweat glands, nerve tissues, and marrow healthy and working efficiently.

Biotin is only needed in small amounts. Since the vitamin is present in a wide variety of foods, dietary deficiencies of biotin are rare. The intestines also make biotin naturally, though it is not known how much biotin from this source can be absorbed and utilized by the body.

Some symptoms of a biotin deficiency may be dry skin, fungal infections, rashes, fine and brittle hair, hair loss, high cholesterol, heart problems, and other symptoms. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult your physician to see if you may have a biotin deficiency.

Side Effects and Warnings of Biotin

Biotin is a vitamin and is included in most daily multi-vitamins. It is not considered to have side effects when taken in a daily vitamin formula per label directions.

If you are pregnant or nursing, check with your care provider before taking any supplement.
