How I Curbed my Addiction to Food

Email To a Friend My name is Sal. I have been working in a call center for the past 3 years. I am a Customer Service supervisor and every time a restaurant menu went around, I placed an order. I would eat at least three times on a nine hour shift. I am single, so I would bring leftovers home to snack on before I went to bed and always ordered double portions when I went out. When I started this job, I weighed around 170 pounds. The stress of work had gotten the best of me and I found comfort in eating. And with all of the different restaurants that delivered made the temptation that much greater.

I ran into a childhood friend on my way to the bank and he commented on how big I had gotten since he last saw me. I brushed off the comment, not realising that I had gained 50 pounds. Soon, I wasn’t able to fit in my suits and my shirts were stretched. While shopping for new work attire, I stumbled upon a book in the window of a neighboring book store named “The Overeater’s Journal”, which caught my attention. After reading the synopsis on the inside cover of the book, I decided to give this book a read. Being that I was in the shopping centre to replace my business-wear, I figured that I had a problem with food.

That day I bought two pairs of trousers and two shirts, ate my usual portion of yummy food at a café next to work, and then went home. As I was unpacking my recent purchases, I remembered the book that I bought and started reading it before bed. Usually I would have a before-bed snack, but decided that this book would be more enriching. Upon awakening the next morning, I looked in the mirror in disgust. I had read the first chapter of the book “The Overeater’s Journal” and decided to take action. For the rest of the week I tallied all of my meals while reducing the portions significantly. By week two, I discarded all of my junk food stashes form my home and office. I knew I was on the right track, but there would be a lot of work ahead.

Within the same month, I acquired a gym membership and have been going reliously for the past year. My eating habits changed a lot and I’m glad that I have this book to help guide me in the right direction and of course the common sense to get healthy and have the confidence to start dating again!
