Visting Rehab Turned My Life Around Forever

Email To a Friend I never thought that I had a drug problem. I started smoking marijuana socially in secondary school and started dabbling in cocaine in my early twenties. I had acquaintances that did drugs all the time and we all maintained jobs and apartments. Last summer, one of my friends introduced me to heroin being that that was the only drug available while on holiday in the U.S. When we got back from our holiday, I started to do heroin more often with this friend. I started missing work and eventually got fired having no way to pay my bills. Every pound that I got went to getting my fix. My friend quickly disappeared after stealing the last of my money.

I was becoming more reckless by the minute. I started selling my body and belongings to get by from day to day. I had no family and had no one to turn to, which led me to get high. I used to wake up in the washrooms of bars and even woke up in a park with no clothes or any recollection of what happened the night before. The turning point in my life came when I got arrested for prostitution and spent a month in jail.

In jail, I was referred to a program for addicts that helped me to begin my recovery. I was so ashamed of all the things I did and how I ruined my life with negligence. The staff were so supportive. I was able to transition into another in-patient program to continue pursuing my sobriety upon my prison release. I was so afraid that if I was released back into my previous environment, that I would digress. I was really determined to get my life back in order because I did have an amazing flat, job and car once upon a time.

After spending two years in rehab I was able to focus on my health and re-focus my priorities. I would have imagined that I would eventually become a counselor at the same clinic that I was treated in. This has helped me to re-establish myself as a productive contribution to society and help others to make a commitment to sober living.
