Blood Pressure Measurement
It is nearly impossible to find anyone who has not taken or had his or her blood pressure measurement taken. It is a simple and painless procedure that anyone can do, whose main purpose is to provide information on the condition of heart and blood vessels.
To measure your blood pressure at home, you can use either an aneroid monitor or a digital monitor.
To take a blood pressure reading, you need to be relaxed and comfortably seated, with your arm well supported. Alternatively, you can lie on an examination couch.
The aneroid monitor has a dial gauge that is read by looking at a pointer. The cuff is inflated by hand, by squeezing a rubber bulb. Digital monitors have either manual or automatic cuffs. The blood pressure reading flashes on a small screen.
When do you need Blood pressure measurement?
Measuring your blood pressure is a good way to take part in managing your health. It is one of the leading signs in finding out if your body is healthy or if you are infected by disease.
Your doctor will also be able to find out the effects on a particular medication or drug by measuring your blood pressure. Systolic and diastolic pressure measurements are important - if either one is raised, it means you have high blood pressure
The doctor measures the maximum pressure (systolic) and the lowest pressure (diastolic) made by the beating of the heart.
The systolic pressure is the maximum pressure in an artery at the moment when the heart is beating and pumping blood through the body.
The diastolic pressure is the lowest pressure in an artery in the moments between beats when the heart is resting.
What are the Risks in Blood pressure measurement?
Taking blood pressure measurement can be done by anyone with the proper tools and skills. Other than the time taken to perform the procedure, there are no known serious risks in taking blood pressure measurements.
