Brain

The brain is a pinkish-gray mass that is composed of about 10 billion nerve cells. The nerve cells are linked to each other and together are responsible for the control of all mental functions.

It is the control center for virtually all body activity necessary for survival. It is thought that the human being uses less than 10% of the brain and this leads to more research as to all the possible functions of the brain.

Anatomy of the Brain

The brain lies within the skull. In humans, the brain weighs about 3 pounds. Differences in weight and size do not correlate with differences in mental ability.

The entire brain is enveloped in three protective sheets known as the meninges. These are continuations of the membranes that wrap the spinal cord. The two inner sheets enclose a shock-absorbing cushion of cerebrospinal fluid.

The brain has five main parts:

  • Cerebrum - The cerebrum is divided into the left and right cerebrums. The cerebrum makes up 85% of the brain's weight. The cerebrum is the thinking part of the brain and it controls your voluntary muscles. When you are thinking very hard, you are using the cerebrum. It also stores your memories and helps you reason,
  • Cerebellum - The cerebellum is at the back of the brain, below the cerebrum. It's a lot smaller than the cerebrum at only 1/8 of its size. It controls balance, movement, and coordination (how your muscles work together). Because of your cerebellum, you can stand upright, keep your balance, and move around.
  • Brain stem - The brain stem sits beneath the cerebrum and in front of the cerebellum. It connects the rest of the brain to the spinal cord, which runs down your neck and back. The brain stem is in charge of all the functions your body needs to stay alive, like breathing air, digesting food, and circulating blood. It is also responsible for many involuntary actions as well as sorting through messages from the body.
  • Pituitary Gland - Its role is to produce and release hormones into your body. It is especially important in releasing growth hormones especially during puberty. It is also important in metabolism, and
  • Hypothalamus - The hypothalamus is your brain's inner thermostat. The hypothalamus knows what temperature your body should be (about 98.6° Fahrenheit or 37° Celsius). If your body is too hot, the hypothalamus tells it to sweat. If you're too cold, the hypothalamus gets you shivering.

Conditions that affect the Brain

Brain conditions account for nearly one third of all chronic illnesses. The quality of life is almost always poor and deteriorating. Most brain conditions do not have cures and are difficult to manage. Some of these include:

  • Stroke,
  • Lou Gehrig’s Disease,
  • Huntington’s disease,
  • Depression,
  • Migraines,
  • Brain tumors, and
  • Alzheimer’s disease

Some of these diseases are genetic and still require more research. However, there are a few things that Miracles for Men can recommend to improve brain function:

  • Eat healthy food especially those containing potassium and calcium,
  • Get plenty of exercise and rest,
  • Avoid alcohol, drugs and tobacco,
  • Include brain challenging activities such as puzzles and reading in your daily schedule, and
  • Always wear protective gear for your head especially in sports or riding your bike.
