Brain Tumor

Brain tumors can start elsewhere in the body and then carried to the brain in blood. In most tumors, a benign or inactive tumor is not considered very serious. With brain tumors however, the fact that the brain is enclosed in a rigid bone casing can harm the brain by pressing on it.

There are different types of tumors in the brain that include:

1. Glioma– Tumors of the glial tissue that binds the nerve cells and fibres together.
2. Meningioma– benign tumors of the membranes that form the brain coverings.
3. Haemangioma– Tumors of the blood vessels.
4. Pituitary Adenoma– Tumors of the pituitary glands.

Brain Tumor Causes

Some brain tumors are present at birth and may be due to abnormal development before birth. These are known as non-congenital brain tumors.

The cause of non-congenital tumors is not fully known. A small percentage is thought to be genetic. People with certain conditions like Turcot syndrome and tuberous sclerosis are thought to be at risk.

The possibility of brain tumors being caused by radiofrequency energy emitted by mobile phones is still under investigation with still divergent views.

Brain Tumor Symptoms

Since the tumor is inside the brain, most of the symptoms are because of the rise in internal pressure from either the tumor or its interference with the normal circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid in the brain.

Once the pressure starts rising in the brain, some of the symptoms will include:

  • Hallucinations,
  • Personality changes,
  • Severe and persistent headaches,
  • Irritability, lethargy, apathy, forgetfulness,
  • Dizziness,
  • Major seizures or local twitching,
  • Loss of part of the field of vision, or
  • Loss of hearing.

If you have new, persistent and severe headaches, without an obvious cause, Miracles for Men advise that you consult your physician.

Treatment of Brain Tumors

The most common treatment ranges from surgical removal of the tumor to radiotherapy. If it is serious, you may also have systemic chemotherapy.

If the tumor causes seizures, medication is also considered. Steroid drugs, painkillers, and anti-nausea drugs can be prescribed. These can be used to reduce the swelling and pressure, reduce headaches and alleviate sickness.

One of the newest treatments is the use of carmustine implants in advanced stages of Gliomas. These are small wafers placed at the tumor site after removal of the tumor. They deliver medicine to slow or stop the growth of cancerous cells.

Modern medicine is slowly getting better at treating brain tumors. The biggest challenge is identifying the specific causes. However, brain tumor management has greatly improved over the years.
