Burdock Root

What is Burdock Root?

Burdock root has many medicinal qualities and has been used in many herbal remedies. The root is sweet to the taste and has a gummy consistency. Traditionally, burdock has been used as a remedy for measles, arthritis, tonsillitis, viruses like colds, throat pain, and as a diuretic. In modern times, burdock is also used in oncology and to treat many other serious health problems.

The benefits of burdock root are immense. Fresh burdock roots contain polyacetylenes, which are plant chemicals that kill some types of bacteria and fungi; burdock has been used to treat both bacterial and fungal infections, including ringworm, urinary tract infections, and acne. Its antibacterial effects may also promote wound healing and help treat ulcers.

Burdock root has often been used to purify the blood by removing toxins that can build up in blood. It is believed that by using burdock root liver damage can be controlled and that the liver can be protected from further damage. Burdock is also thought to promote the flow and release of bile, which not only helps in cleansing the liver, but also aids the digestive process.

The consumption of burdock root benefits the treatment of gastrointestinal conditions, stimulates the digestive organs and also treats various stomach ailments. The mucilage, "bitter" and insulin content in burdock help to support good digestion, as well as soothe the digestive tract and help many stomach conditions.

It can be taken orally or used topically as a remedy for skin disorders. Burdock root has been used extensively in the preparation of skin ointments that treat various skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Burdock root oil, also known as Bur oil, is used in scalp and hair treatment.

Side Effects and Warnings of Burdock Root

Burdock is generally believed to be safe when taken by mouth in recommended doses for short periods of time. You should however follow the recommended dosage and your doctor’s advice.

Handling the plant or using preparations on the skin (such as plasters) has occasionally been reported to cause allergic skin reactions. Diuretic effects and oestrogen-like effects have been reported with oral burdock use in patients with HIV.

Caution is advised on the use of the burdock by women during pregnancy as taking very large quantities of the burdock root can actively stimulate the uterus and create a multitude of problems for the woman concerned.
