Can I Lose Weight by Swimming?
Losing weight has become one of the biggest issues in modern day society. A whole industry has mushroomed to take care for all those who wish to have a slimmer and leaner body. Healthy living has become a necessity in this day of fast food and processed without any exercise.
Various methods have been used by those trying to lose weight. It has been found that obesity or the gaining of weight is generally caused by eating unhealthy food and also lack of physical activity. Many have found that even with the right diet, there is still a need for physical activity if only to keep off any weight that has been lost during the diet sessions.
Going to the gym as a way to increase physical activity is one of the top choices by those trying to lose weight. The problem with weight lifting and bodybuilding is that over time the discipline to continuously go to the gym every two days is difficult for most of us. The fees to go to gyms are also an added cost to our already over-stretched budgets.
Swimming as a physical activity on the other hand is probably one of the easiest ways to exercise. Most small towns have public swimming places and most bodies of water like rivers, ponds and the ocean are still free to use. The lack of discipline is also not a big issue for most swimmers. Nearly all of us have gone swimming when we were young and it was meant to be a fun experience. It is very rare that you find someone complaining that they are going to the pool too much and are depressed about it. So as a fun and cheap way to increase physical activity in your weight loss plan, swimming is a great way to lose weight.
Swimming the right way is also very important in order to burn calories and thus increase weight loss. Professional swimmers have been shown to burn a lot of calories. This is probably because they follow the proper swimming techniques, use nearly all their body muscles and generally pushing to achieve greater performance.
In order to lose weight, the body must burn calories that it normally would not use. If the swimming activity is not intense, then your body will not be pushed hard enough to burn any extra calories. Just like any other training exercise, the swimmer who wishes to lose weight by swimming must constantly push himself to his limit in order to get the best weight loss results.
Swimming has been shown to also avoid injury from waist and lower limb exercises. Exercises like squats and weight lifting can cause injury to the body especially for those not well conversant with proper weight lifting techniques. A portion of body weight is taken up by water buoyancy when swimming. This reduces the risk of injury to the lower body.
When swimming in water, there is greater resistance from the water than on land. This helps to train your back, chest, abdomen, hip and leg muscles all at the same time. The rate of heat loss in water is also greater than on land thus excess body fats are easily burned.
