Chlamydia
Every year the number of new Chlamydia cases has been increasing in the UK. It is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. The problem with Chlamydia is that it sometimes has no symptoms in both men and women unless it leads to complications.
Causes of Chlamydia
Being a sexually transmitted infection, it is passed on from one person to another during intimate sexual contact. You can get it through
- Having unprotected vaginal sex,
- Having unprotected anal sex,
- Having unprotected oral sex, or
- Having genital contact with an infected person.
You cannot catch Chlamydia through swimming pools, spas or toilet seats. However, it can be transmitted from mother to baby during childbirth. This is dangerous since the child can have serious pneumonia complications some two weeks after childbirth.

For men the most common symptom is urethral discharge from the penis. You may also have inflammation of the tube leading from the bladder to the tip of the penis as well as the inflammation of the tube leading from the testes to the penis.
In some cases, it can also cause a condition that affects the eyes and joints known as Reiter’s syndrome. Fertility problems in men are also common.
In women, there will often be no symptoms. However if you have
- Cystitis
- A change in vaginal discharge ,and
- Mild lower abdominal pain
You should consider having your doctor test for Chlamydia.
The biggest issue is that it takes time if at all to see symptoms. Partners have been known to transfer the condition from different people without their knowledge.
Chlamydia Treatment and Prevention
