Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a condition with no known cause. A state of chronic fatigue or tiredness exists for six months or more. It affects tens of thousands of people but occurs more frequently in women than in men. People with CFS are unable to perform normal work duties at home or at work and have short-term memory. Though it can cause depression, depression is not to cause chronic fatigue syndrome.
Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
You may have chronic fatigue syndrome if you are constantly tired for six months or longer and all other known conditions have been eliminated as the cause of your tiredness.
If you have four or more of the following symptoms:
- Significant problems with short term memory or concentration,
- Sore throat,
- Tender lymph nodes,
- Muscle pain,
- Pain in several joints without swelling or redness,
- Feeling tired and un-refreshed even after sleeping,
- Headaches that are different in pattern, and
- Extreme tiredness lasting more than 24 hours after you exercise or exert yourself
The exact cause of CFS is still unknown. The condition may be related to infection with effects on the immune system. Some evidence indicates that the bacterium Chlamydia pneumoniae may cause CFS in some cases. However, this is still in debate.
Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Because there is no known cause for CFS, treatment is normally directed at relief of symptoms rather than cure. The goal is to achieve a level of previous function or well-being. This leads to people with CFS not quickly returning to a satisfactory level of function.
This leads to people expecting a quick recovery working too hard, becoming frustrated and becoming less responsive to rehabilitation programs. People with CFS should pace themselves and avoid excessive physical or emotional stress. If it is too serious, professional physical therapy may be required.
Total rest should be avoided since it may make it worse. You should maintain physical activity at a comfortable pace.
As for medicine, Miracles for Men recommend that you consult your physician and take note of any side effects that may increase your fatigue.
As for prevention, one should avoid the known triggers for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. These include stress, too much exercise and lack of sleep.
It has taken a long time for CFS to be recognized as a serious condition. With proper treatment strategies and regular care, it is possible for people to get better even from the worst cases.
