Citrus Aurantium

What is Citrus Aurantium?

Citrus Aurantium is a small orange tree native to South East Asia. It produces small bitter oranges that are now used in dietary supplements to aid in fat loss or as appetite suppressants. It has become a potent dietary supplement especially now that it can be used to replace the banned ephedrine.

Over the centuries, these bitter oranges were highly valued for their food and medicinal properties. In ancient China, unripe bitter oranges were used to make zhi shi, an herbal extract used to treat constipation, improve energy (chi) and to calm nerves in cases of insomnia and shock. In the Amazon rainforest, indigenous tribes used bitter orange tea as a laxative and to relieve nausea, stomach pains, indigestion, gas and constipation.

Using Citrus Aurantium as a fat burner has become increasingly popular. In fact, it is now used in many of the most popular natural weight loss supplements because of the thermogenic effect it has on the body. This metabolism increase makes the body burn fat at a faster rate than normal, which is effective for weight loss.

Preliminary study shows promising results using oil of bitter orange as an antifungal agent. This has yet to be clinically proven and more research is required.

Side Effects and Warnings of Citrus Aurantium

Though it is becoming very popular, Citrus Aurantium has some side effects that may require quick action. Evidence shows some increase in heart rate and short-term calorie burn, and it may raise blood pressure and exacerbate existing heart problems.

You should always seek advice from your medical practitioner before you use Citrus Aurantium.
