Dextrose

What is Dextrose?

Dextrose (AKA glucose) is a high GI (glycemic index), fast absorbing type of simple carbohydrate. Dextrose is used by bodybuilders and athletes to induce an insulin spike and replace glycogen in muscle cells which is lost during training.

Dextrose rates very high on the glycemic index meaning that it enters our system extremely fast and so stimulates a high insulin response very quickly. Insulin is a very anabolic hormone as it takes not only glucose to muscle cells, but proteins, amino acids and other essential nutrients such as creatine and glutamine etc.

Dextrose can also b e used by endurance athletes. Typically a lower dose will be used and taken gradually before and during training with 20-35oz of water.

Both resistance and endurance athletes can benefit from taking dextrose. People looking to build muscle and gain weight will get the most out of post workout supplementation with dextrose. Endurance athletes can get the same benefits as dextrose provides with a good sports energy drink containing simple carbohydrates.

Fructose, dextrose, and phosphoric acid combination is used to treat nausea and vomiting. However, this combination has not been proven to be effective.

Dextrose is a reducing sugar and improves the inhibition of oxidative degradation, thus increasing colour stabilisation. This can help to extend the shelf life of food products.

Dextrose is the ideal carbohydrate source for yeast fermentation in baking and brewing. The fermentation begins immediately and proceeds rapidly. Dextrose provides energy to the cell to produce many by-products in addition to carbon dioxide and ethanol. Also, dextrose is used in lactic acid fermentation processes in the pickling and the meat industry.

Side Effects and Warnings of Dextrose

Dextrose is a relatively safe supplement but you should stop taking Dextrose and get emergency help immediately if any of the following effects occur:

  • Fainting
  • Swelling of face, arms, and legs
  • Unusual bleeding
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss, and
  • Yellow eyes or skin

You should always seek medical advice before taking this or any other dietary supplements.
