Diarrhea

Unlike constipation where one has difficulty-passing stool, diarrhea is the passing of frequent, watery stool. It is normally a symptom of another condition and can be either acute or chronic.

Acute diarrhea is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection. It usually clears up in a couple of days and is not serious. The risk of dehydration however, makes it serious for babies, the elderly and the frail. Chronic diarrhea on the other hand may be a sign of a more serious condition and Miracles for Men recommends that you consult a doctor.

What Causes Diarrhea?

It occurs when the lining of the small or large intestines become irritated. The irritation causes irregular and strong contractions that cause stomach pain. This also leads to increased water being passed in the stool.

The most common cause for diarrhea is infection with a virus or bacteria. The infection may be caused by infected food (food poisoning). Other causes may include:

  • Anxiety or emotional upset,
  • Excessive alcohol intake,
  • Coffee or sweets, or
  • Side effects from some medication

For chronic diarrhea, it can be caused by long-term conditions such as Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance and pancreatitis.

Diarrhea Symptoms

It is hard to miss diarrhea symptoms. They include:

  • Cramping tummy pains,
  • Nausea or vomiting,
  • Fever,
  • Headache, and
  • Loss of appetite

If it lasts more than two weeks, it can be considered chronic.

Diarrhea Treatment

If you have chronic diarrhea, you should consult your doctor immediately. For acute diarrhea, everyone goes through it at one time or another. You can use some of the following tips to ease your symptoms:

1. Eat as soon as you can. You should eat foods high in carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, rice or potatoes as soon as you feel like. There is no need to force it, but eating can make you feel more comfortable.
2. Painkillers. Take recommended doses of painkillers especially if you have a fever. This should ease your pain.
3. Avoid dehydration. If you are vomiting, you should take small frequent sips of water or diluted fruit juices.
4. Hygiene. Continue with good hygiene especially if you could infect others.
5. Anti-diarrhea medicines. These can relieve symptoms of acute diarrhea and can be useful to reduce discomfort and social disruption. If you have blood in your stool, you should consult your doctor.

Cleanliness and good hand hygiene will help protect you from infectious diarrhea. Always wash your hands after using the toilet, gardening, or playing with pets before you touch food. If your job involves preparing food, you should not work for 48 hours after your symptoms clear up.
