Ellagic Acid
What is Ellagic Acid?Ellagic acid is usually stored as ellagitannin in raspberries, Strawberries, cranberries, walnuts, pecans, pomegranates, and other food. It is a phenolic compound, and is widely used in alternative medicine as it is felt to be a proven anti-carcinogen, anti-mutagen, and anti-cancer initiator.
Meeker raspberry is the best source available, but even the Meeker raspberry, does not produce any direct Ellagic Acid content. It is the ellagitannin content that is important, and this is converted into Ellagic Acid on consumption.
Meeker Red Raspberries may also prevent heart disease, as they contain a natural form of aspirin called salicylates. Herbalists also believe that Ellagitannins are effective in treating diarrhoea and nausea.
Ellagic Acid seems to act by being a scavenger of cancer-causing chemicals, rendering them inactive, and preventing binding of carcinogens to DNA, and inhibiting the ability of other chemicals to cause mutations in bacteria. Scientific research demonstrates that the Ellagic Acid formed by the Ellagitannins taken from Meeker Red Raspberries reduces the incidence of cancer in cultured human cells exposed to carcinogens.
Further medical research is still being carried out on the potency of Ellagic Acid when it comes to treating:
- Breast Cancer,
- Leukaemia,
- Oesophagus cancer,
- Bladder Cancer, and
- Prostate Cancer
