Female Reproductive System
The male and female reproductive systems are essential for reproduction. The male reproductive system will fertilize the female egg in the female reproductive system. This will ensure that humans pass on certain genes and characteristics to the next generation.
Components of the Female Reproductive System
The female reproductive system is located in the pelvis. It has both external and internal organs.
The external part of the female reproductive organs is called the vulva. It is located between the legs and covers the opening to the vagina and other internal reproductive organs. It consists of:
1. Mos pubis - Fleshy are located above the top of the vaginal opening,
2. Labia - Two pairs of skin flaps that surround the vaginal opening,
3. Clitoris - A small sensory organ
The internal female reproductive organs are:
1. Vagina - The vagina serves as the part where the penis is inserted during intercourse, the birth canal and the route for menstrual blood and urine,
2. The uterus - It contains some of the strongest muscles in the body. It will expand and contract to accommodate a growing fetus and helps push the baby out during the labor,
3. Fallopian tubes - This is what connects the uterus to the ovaries, and
4. Ovaries - They produce, store and release eggs into the fallopian tube. They also produce female sex hormones like estrogen and progesterone.
How the Female Reproductive System Works
The female reproductive system enables a female to:
- Produce the eggs or ova,
- Have sexual intercourse,
- Produce and nourish the fertilized egg until it is fully developed,
- Give birth
When the male deposits sperm into the vagina, the sperm will move up through the uterus to meet the egg in the fallopian tube. A week after the sperm fertilizes the egg, it is implanted in the uterus where it is fed and nourished over a period of nine months. After the nine months, the baby is born.
Conditions that Affect the Female Reproductive System
Each part of the female reproductive system can be individually affected by any condition. Most of the time, these conditions can be treated with a few being life threatening. They include:
- Labial adhesions,
- Vulvovaginitis,
- Ovarian tumors,
- Ovarian cysts,
- Ovarian torsion,
- Menstrual problems like dysmenorrheal, menorrhagia, and
- Sexual transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS, genital herpes,
- Toxic shock syndrome
Taking care of the female reproductive system is essential for the continuation of a family.
