Heart
The heart is the center of your circulator system. It is a muscular organ that acts like a pump to send blood to all organs of the body. A system of inlet and outlet valves in your heart chambers work to ensure that blood flows in the right direction.
Without the heart pumping action, you will not get nutrients in your body. This is because blood will not be pumped to your organs and you will eventually die.
Anatomy of the Heart
The heart is located under the ribcage in the center of the chest between the right and left lung. It is shaped like an upside down pear. The size of the heart will vary with age, size or your health. Most diseases of the heart make it become larger as it needs to do more work.
The heart has four chambers: The right and left atria, and the right and left ventricles.
Connected to the heart are some of the main blood vessels, arteries and veins, that make up your blood circulatory system.
The ventricle on the right side of your heart pumps blood from the heart to your lungs. When you breathe in air, oxygen passes from your lungs through blood vessels where it’s added to your blood. Carbon dioxide, a waste product, is passed from your blood through blood vessels to your lungs and is removed from your body when you breathe air out.
The atrium on the left side of your heart receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs. The pumping action of your left ventricle sends this oxygen-rich blood through the aorta to the rest of your body.
The used blood from the vena cavae flows into your heart’s right atrium and then on to the right ventricle. From the right ventricle, the used blood is pumped through the pulmonary arteries to your lungs. Here, through many small, thin blood vessels called capillaries, your blood picks up oxygen needed by all the areas of your body.
The oxygen-rich blood passes from your lungs back to your heart through the pulmonary veins.
Oxygen-rich blood from your lungs passes through the pulmonary veins. It enters the left atrium and is pumped into the left ventricle. From the left ventricle, your blood is pumped to the rest of your body through the aorta.
Conditions that affect the Heart
Your body needs oxygen and nutrients to function properly. Diseases and conditions of the heart make it difficult for your heart to pump blood normally or efficiently. This can lead to sudden death or a slow and steady decline in body functions.
Some of the most common heart conditions include:
- Heart failure,
- Heart attack,
- Heart murmur,
- High blood pressure,
- Angina,
- Sudden cardiac arrest, and
- Heart valve disease
There are many more heart conditions. Miracles for Men recommend that one seeks immediate medical attention when one suspects they have any heart condition.
