How to Prevent Greasy Skin

First and foremost good news! Oily skin ages slower compared to other types of skin. So its not an all loose-loose situation. Now coming to the bit about preventing greasy skin. Remember, there is no cure for oily skin but yes, there are plenty of things you can do to keep the oil from surfacing to an embarrassing proportion on your face. Here are a few tips and techniques:

Cleansing:

The most important of your oily skin care regime is cleansing. This cleanses the skin surface from clogging up with dirt and hence you get fewer break outs. A non-oily and non-creamy cleanser is best for the purpose. Washing the face with a mild soap having no harsh chemicals is also a good idea. Cleansers may be easily prepared at home. All you have to do is mix a teaspoon of skimmed milk with a little turmeric powder and water to make a solution that can then be applied to the face with cotton-balls. Never go to sleep with make-up on or before washing your face.

A word of caution! DO NOT OVER WASH. This can lead to the skin drying out and sending the wrong signals to the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. And we certainly don’t want that.

Toning:

A toner helps to tighten up the pores and hence lessens the chances of catching blackhead causing dirt. Toner is generally used after cleansing so if there are any traces of oil or cleanser still left they can be removed before they cause any harm. A toner with antibacterial qualities is the most suitable for oily skin. Tea tree oil based toners are just that and help to kill acne causing bacteria. Moisturizing is not meant for oily skins but there are oil absorbing and non-oily moisturizers available that help keep the skin hydrated and should be used every once in a while.

Exfoliating:

Exfoliation is the process by which dead cells can be removed from the skin leaving it looking clean and smooth. For people with severely oily skin that causes acne, manual exfoliating agents are not recommended as these can be harsh on the skin. Chemical exfoliators are suggested for such cases which are basically fruit acids. The chemical acts by loosening the dead skin and then dissolving it.

Applying Masks:

Face masks are a great way of keeping your skin looking good. Clay masks work wonders for oily skin as it absorbs extra oil from the skin. Masks can be easily made at home. Mix a tablespoon of yogurt, tomato juice, multani mitti with a tablespoon of honey and a little camphor. Use this regularly and the difference will manifest itself in a few weeks.

Eating a balanced Diet:

A balanced diet plays an important role in keeping your skin healthy. Do not eat deep fried foods. Avoid sugar and salt and keep your diet rich in proteins. Fresh fruits and vegetables look after your skin needs. Vitamin B supplements maintain the skin’s oil balance and of course drink plenty of water.
