IGF-1

What is IGF-1?

IGF stands for Insulin-like Growth Factor, named so due to its structure being very similar to the hormone insulin, and is one of a group of hormones call somatomedins.

IGF-1 plays a crucial role in muscle regeneration. IGF-1 stimulates both proliferation and differentiation of stem cells. IGF-1, when injected locally, increases satellite cell activity, muscle DNA, muscle protein content, muscle weight and muscle cross sectional area.

IGF-1 acts to induce muscle growth with or without overload although it really shines as a growth promoter when combined with physical loading of the muscle.

IGF-1 also acts as an endocrine growth factor having an anabolic effect on distant tissues once released into the blood stream by the liver. IGF-1 possesses the insulin-like property of inhibiting degradation.

IGF-1 has also proved useful for bodybuilders who suffer from testicular atrophy. It returns the testicles to their former self and also keeps them from shrinking after it is used. IGF-1 though is not a supplement that should be used by novice trainers.

Side Effects and Warnings of IGF-1

Very large doses of IGF-1 can cause headaches, occasional nausea and can contribute to low blood sugar in some users. This is one of the reasons you should follow the usage instructions and also seek your doctor’s advice before using IGF-1 based products.

There are other serious risks that can occur with the use of IGF-I, such as increased risk of cancer, accelerated growth of tumours and enlargement of intestinal organs. For these reasons, it should be re-emphasised that, IGF-1 should not be taken lightly.

IGF1 will attach its self to the lining of the intestine and cause atrophy of the gut. Everything that it touches grows and this includes the receptors on the lining of the large intestine and inner wall of the abdominal well.
