Impotence
Impotence is a male dysfunction that occurs when one is unable to get and maintain an erection that is sufficient for sexual intercourse. It is also known as erectile dysfunction. (ED). It is a very common condition especially for men between 40 and 70 years. Many men will experience periods of impotence that resolve without treatment.
Causes of Impotence
When one is sexually aroused, the brain sends signals to nerves in the penis to increase the blood flow, triggering an erection. If anything interferes with this, it can cause erectile dysfunction. Some of the causes of erectile dysfunction include:
Physical Causes of Impotence
The physical causes for erectile dysfunction include:
Vasculogenic - These are health conditions that affect the flow of blood to your penis. They include heart disease and high blood pressure,
Neurogenic - These are health conditions that affect the nervous system. They include Parkinson’s disease and spinal injury,
Hormonal - These are health conditions that affect your hormonal levels. These include an over-active thyroid gland,
Anatomical - These are health conditions that affect the physical structure of the penis. These include Peyronie’s disease and hypospadias.
Medicinal Causes of Impotence
Some men are affected by some medication. There are many drugs that can affect erectile function and Miracles for Men recommends talking to your doctor about possible side effects of these drugs. They include steroids, antidepressants, diuretics, anticonvulsants, antihypertensives and fibrates.
Psychological Causes of Impotence
Some common psychological causes of impotence include:
- Depression,
- Anxiety and stress, and
- Unresolved issues with your partner
Other causes may include obesity, smoking, alcohol, tiredness or drugs like cannabis and cocaine. Some sports like cycling can also lead to erectile dysfunction.
Most of the time impotence can be caused by both physical and psychological reasons. For example, if you have heart disease, it can cause impotence leading to anxiety about the situation. The combination of the two then leads to impotence.
Symptoms of Impotence
The symptoms are simply failing to achieve an erection. The period when this happens can be an indicator of the cause of the condition. For example if you are able to achieve an erection on your own or with another partner other than your own, then it could be a psychological reason. If you are however, never able to achieve one, the cause could be physical.
Treatment of Impotence
The treatment of impotence will depend on the underlying cause of the condition. If it is due to an underlying health condition, the condition will have to be treated first before, impotence treatment begins. In some cases, this will also treat the condition.
Other treatment options include:
Change in lifestyle - Avoid smoking, lose weight, regular exercise and moderating alcohol consumption,
Using PDE-5 inhibitors - This work by temporarily increasing blood flow to the penis. Some famous ones include Viagra, Cialis and Levitra,
Hormone therapy - Used if the cause of impotence is hormonal,
Penis pump - This may be used to increased blood flow,
Alprostadil - This is a synthetic hormone that stimulates blood flow,
Surgery - If there is clear evidence of blockage of blood supply and all other treatments have failed, then surgery is used,
Psychosexual counseling - If the cause is psychological, then counseling techniques are used including cognitive behavioral therapy.
