Inositol
What is Inositol?Inositol is a member of the vitamin B complex. Other than the food, inositol is also synthesized in cells. . It is stored largely in the brain, muscles, liver, and kidneys. It is required for proper formation of cell membranes. Inositol affects nerve transmission and helps in transporting fats within the body
You will normally find it in the following foods: Lecithin, soybeans, milk, lima beans, wheat germ, wheat, brown rice (unpolished), raisins, dark molasses, cabbage, cantaloupe, brewer's yeast, nuts especially peanuts, fresh fruits especially citrus, beef brain, heart, liver (contain high saturated fats).
Inositol and Inositol based supplements are currently used for the following health benefits:
- It prevents accumulation of fat in the liver; helps prevent the development of cirrhosis and degenerative changes on the kidneys.
- Aids in the metabolism of cholesterol, thus preventing atherosclerosis.
- Combines with Choline to form lecithin, thus protecting the arteries against hardening and cholesterol.
- Essential for proper functioning of the heart, eyes and brain.
- Helps prevent hardening of the arteries and protects the liver, kidneys and heart.
- Important for the production of healthy cells in the bone marrow, eye membranes and intestines.

Side Effects and Warnings of Inositol
People with chronic renal failure show elevated levels and should not take inositol, except under medical supervision. Large amounts of phytate, the common dietary form of inositol, reduce the absorption of calcium, iron, and zinc. However, supplemental inositol does not have this effect.
Some research has shown that inositol may stimulate uterine contractions. While no research has demonstrated that inositol actually has this effect, women who are or could become pregnant should consult a doctor before taking inositol.
