L-Carnitine

What is L-Carnitine?

L-Carnitine is an essential nutrient found in the body that helps in transporting fat into your cell mitochondria where it is transformed into energy which can be used up by your body. Meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products are the richest sources of L-carnitine.

L-Carnitine plays an important role in preventing fatty build up, especially in the heart, liver, and skeletal muscles, and it helps keep blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in check. It may be useful for angina pectoris, congestive heart failure, and elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It is also used for recovery from a heart attack.

L-Carnitine may be helpful to those that suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome. Studies have shown decreased L-carnitine levels in many chronic fatigue sufferers. Carnitine has also been used for male infertility. Low sperm count and abnormal motility have been linked to low L-carnitine levels in men. Other conditions L-carnitine supplementation may be of benefit include:

  • Down's syndrome
  • Alcohol-related Liver Disease
  • Kidney Disease and Haemodialysis

L-carnitine is widely used as a natural method for weight loss since it enables burning of fat at much higher speeds. It can also decrease your cravings, increase your energy during exercise and increase your metabolic rate.
Side Effects and Warnings of L-Carnitine

Some reported L-carnitine side effects include vomiting, nausea, headache, diarrhoea, stuffy nose, restlessness and sleeping difficulty. Some serious side effects may include fast heartbeat rates, increase in your blood pressure and fever.

If you have low or border-line thyroid levels, you should not take L-carnitine as it may impair the action of your thyroid hormone. Also, if you are on dialysis, taking L-carnitine is highly discouraged.

L-carnitine side effects can only prove harmful to you if you do not use it as advised. You should always follow product usage instructions and consult your doctor before using any L-carnitine based supplements.
