Maca
What is Maca?Maca is a highly nutritious root crop that can be found in the wild in Peru, Paraguay and Argentina. It can be baked, roasted or prepared as a porridge and contains up to 11% protein content. Natives of the Andes Mountains have been using maca roots adapting powers to be able to withstand living at extremely high altitudes where oxygen levels are lower.
Traditionally in Peru, maca has been used as an aphrodisiac. Maca could improve sexual desire in healthy men independent of changes in mood, or serum testosterone levels. Higher quality studies are needed in this area, in both men and women.
Due to maca root's effect on the Endocrine system it is able to regulate metabolism, energy levels, growth, and sexual development and helps to develop a healthy sense of well being and attitude towards life.
As far as women who are going through menopause, maca is especially wonderful for them. Maca has proved to be very effective with menopausal patients in eliminating hot flashes and depression and in increasing energy levels.
Side Effects and Warnings of Maca
Maca when used in recommended dosage has been proven to be free of serious side effects. However, use cautiously in patients with hormone responsive cancers such as breast cancer, or prostate cancer, and patients who are using birth control pills due to the potential effects of maca on sex hormone regulation.
Consumption of large amounts of maca may cause bloating and flatulence. Fresh Maca can also cause stomach pains.
Maca may also lead to stimulation of the central nervous system. Use cautiously in patients with hypertension (high blood pressure), due to the possibility of central nervous system stimulation.
