Motherwort

What is Motherwort?

Motherwort extracts typically come from the seeds or nut lets found in the dry, thorny flowering heads of Leonurus cardiaca. It was used mainly in traditional Chinese medicine to promote longevity and treat menstrual disorders.

Recent studies performed in China have shown that motherwort helps prevent blood clots relax the heart muscle, and lower blood pressure. Of course, anyone with a diagnosed or suspected heart condition should be under a doctor’s care.

Motherwort contains alkaloids that not only help lower blood pressure but also have a sedating effect on the central nervous system, which supports motherwort traditional use as a treatment for depression anxiety. The tranquilizing effects of this herb may benefit those experiencing anxiety as well as those having trouble sleeping.

Motherwort may indeed benefit women who are trying to induce menstruation, but those that are pregnant or trying to get pregnant should avoid motherwort altogether.

Motherwort is also available at health food stores and some pharmacies in extracts, teas, capsules, and tablets. Just be sure to follow the dosage instructions on the package.

Side Effects and Warnings of Motherwort

The most common side effects from using Motherwort are prolonged bleeding and skin sensitivity to light.

Some drugs also cause side effects when used together with Motherwort. These include lanoxin, drugs used to treat liver disease, Coumadin, and heart drugs. You should inform your doctor if you are using such medication. People taking blood thinners also should not consume motherwort since it may increase the effects of these drugs.

You should avoid using Motherwort if you are pregnant or have a low platelet count. You should also avoid direct sunlight when using this herb. All in all, remember to consult your doctor before using the supplement to avoid any negative effects to your health.
