Neck
The neck is the part of the body that distinguishes the head from the torso or trunk. It can be said that the neck is what the head sits on, in order to get support to the body.
The neck supports the weight of the head and protects the nerves that carry sensory and motor information from the brain down to the rest of the body. Injury to the neck can therefore be very serious and can lead to paralysis or even death.
The neck is highly flexible and allows the head to turn and flex in all directions.
Various nerves and veins pass through the neck and these include the external jugular nerve, the anterior jugular nerve and the spinal accessory nerve.
The main muscles in the neck are the Splenius muscle and the Sternocleidomastoid muscle.
