Niacin

What is Niacin?

Niacin is commonly known as vitamin B3. The term niacin refers to nicotinic acid and nicotine, which are both used by the body to form coenzymes.

Like other B vitamins, Niacin is needed for energy production. It makes enzymes that help your cells turn carbohydrates into energy. The important role of Niacin in energy production is that it also helps control how much glucose (sugar) is in your blood, which in turn helps give you energy just when you need it.

Niacin is also useful in the making of fatty acids. It also helps the digestive system function and promotes a normal appetite and healthy skin and nerves. Vitamin B3 also helps in the breakdown of proteins and fats and in the formation of red blood cells.

Niacin has been used successfully to increase blood flow and improve circulation. It is used in the synthesis of sex hormones, treating schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. It is also widely used in memory enhancing supplements.

Those who use alcohol frequently or are vegetarian or vegan may certainly want to take a niacin supplement. Alcohol inhibits niacin absorption, and diets that lack protein are probably niacin deficient.

Extreme cases of niacin deficiency can even lead to the development of a potentially fatal disease called Pellagra. Pellagra is caused by a lack of niacin, and is characterized by diarrhoea, mental disorders, depression, and skin problems.

Side Effects and Warnings of Niacin

It is very important that you always follow the dosage recommended when using Niacin. This is because, though it is a safe vitamin, at high doses, you are likely to suffer from:

  • Flushing of the skin
  • Itching and tingling
  • Upset stomach
  • Headache and dizziness
  • Heartburn, nausea and vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Liver damage

You should always consult with your doctor before adding Niacin as a dietary supplement. Excessive use of Niacin, without your doctor’s advice can be damaging to your health.
