Pantothenic Acid

What is Pantothenic Acid?

Pantothenic acid or vitamin B5 is a water soluble vitamin that is found widely in nature and is very important for human (as well as animals) for growth, reproduction and in normal physiological function. It is involved in many bodily functions and is indeed very essential.

The most significant and widely publicized pantothenic acid supplement benefit is its use in acne reduction. The thinking is that the production of CoA accelerates the breakdown of skin oils that are major factors in the aetiology of acne.

Pantothenic acid or vitamin B5 is sometimes called the anti-stress vitamin and there are indications that it may be helpful in treating depression and anxiety. Pantothenic acid is needed to make hormones and healthy red blood cells, convert carbohydrates and fat into energy, aid in the formation of antibodies, and is reputed to be a stamina enhancer.

Pantothenic acid is also used widely to accelerate wound and scar healing. It has been seen to help in the production of collagen as well as protein synthesis on the wound site.

Pantothenic acid supplements are also suggested to reverse many negative side effects of alcoholism, specifically disturbed motor function. It also helps protect the body from various toxins, such as carbon tetrachloride and phenols.

Food sources of pantothenic acid include poultry, fish, meat, whole grains, broccoli, mushrooms, and legumes. It is important to note that since it is easily destroyed by heat, pantothenic acid can be lost during food preparation.

Side Effects and Warnings of Pantothenic Acid

Like all B vitamins, pantothenic acid is water-soluble, so overdose is extremely unlikely. The body excretes excess amounts of vitamin B5 naturally, though extremely high doses may cause diarrhoea.

Even though it is safe for most users, you should still consult your doctor before you use it as a supplement in your diet.
