Para Aminobenzoic Acid
What is Para-Aminobenzoic Acid?Para-aminobenzoic acid or PABA is a non-protein amino acid that is widely distributed in nature. It is sometimes referred to as vitamin Bx (Vitamin B Complex), but it is neither a vitamin nor an essential nutrient for humans. Its role in human nutrition is not definitely known.
PABA is most commonly used for its ability to protect the skin from the harmful rays of the sun when used topically. It has also been suggested that PABA may prevent or even reverse the accumulation of abnormal fibrous tissue in the body.
In short, some of the benefits claimed made by Para-Aminobenzoic Acid producers include:
- Helps maintain the natural colour and premature greying of hair.
- Facilitates the production of folic acid
- Helps maintain healthy skin and intestines.
- Helps in the formation of blood cells.
- Helps metabolize proteins.
- Acts as an antioxidant which neutralizes the injurious effects of free radicals.
- Is beneficial for normal growth.
PABA can be found in such foods as liver, molasses, whole grains, mushrooms and spinach. It is also sometimes made by intestinal bacteria. A diet that includes these things will normally prevent a deficiency.
Side Effects and Warnings of Para-Aminobenzoic Acid
There is a possibility one could experience a deficiency in PABA. Some signs of a deficiency maybe depression, fatigue, irritability, nervousness, and constipation. It could also be indicated by weeping eczema and/or patchy skin.
