Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an inflammation of the tissues in one or both of your lungs. Tiny sacs at the end of the lungs called alveoli can become infected, becoming inflamed and filling up with fluid. The inflammation can make it harder to breathe and makes you less able to absorb oxygen.
Causes of Pneumonia
The most common cause of pneumonia is bacterial infection. The bacteria streptococcus pneumoniae. Other types of bacteria that cause pneumonia include haemophilus influenzae and staphylococcus aureus.
Viruses can also cause pneumonia. These include the chicken pox virus and the flu virus. On rare cases, you can contact pneumonia if you inhale a foreign object, vomit or harmful substance. Allergies and fungal pneumonia are other causes of the condition.
Symptoms of Pneumonia
Pneumonia symptoms can occur slowly over a 24-48 hours period. Some of the common symptoms include:
- Wheezing,
- Coughing up thick mucus that may be yellow, green, brown or blood stained,
- Rapid heartbeat,
- Fever,
- Loss of appetite,
- Pain in your chest, and
- Sweating and shivering
If you have very severe symptoms, you are likely to feel confused and disoriented as well as your skin turning ashen or blue.
Treatment and Prevention of Pneumonia
Most pneumonia cases can be treated from home. Taking antibiotics will normally work with pneumonia. When treating pneumonia at home, it is also a good idea to take painkillers to reduce fever and pain. In very serious cases, hospitalization may be necessary.
People in high risk groups should consider getting immunized against pneumonia. The recommended vaccinations can be the pneumonia jab or the flu jab.
Improving or changing your lifestyle can go a long way towards reducing your risk to pneumonia. A healthy lifestyle without smoking, alcohol abuse, and intravenous drug abuse can improve your chances of avoiding pneumonia.
Regular exercise as well as good hygiene is also recommended by Miracles for Men. Throw away tissues used when you have a cold and wash your hands regularly to avoid the transfer of germs.
