Polydextrose
What is Polydextrose?Given the rapid increase in obesity and diabetes in many countries, there is an increasing demand for fibre-enhanced, sugar-free and reduced-calorie products globally. Polydextrose is one such product that is slowly becoming ideal especially as an ingredient in many dairy products.
Polydextrose is comprised of 90% soluble fibre and contains only 1 calorie/g as compared to 4 calories/g for typical carbohydrates. It is a non-digestible polysaccharide composed of randomly cross-linked glucose. It is highly soluble and neutral tasting, making it one of the most versatile fibres available.
When polydextrose enters the small intestine, it resists digestion and move on into the large intestine where it is partially fermented. The remainder is excreted from the body in the same manner as fibre is excreted.
The physiological benefits of polydextrose include increased faecal bulk, reduced transit time, lower faecal pH and reduced concentration of putrefactive substances in the colon. Polydextrose's pre-biotic effects help promote growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria, while fermentation in the large intestine yields short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate.
Polydextrose is metabolized independently of insulin, which makes it suitable for diabetics. A glycemic index of about 5 (compared to 65 for sucrose) makes polydextrose suitable for developing dairy products with a lower glycemic load. The control of blood sugar levels helps to moderate intake of food and promote satiety.
Polydextrose enables the development of products with nutrient content claims such as high in fibre, good source of fibre, reduced calorie, no sugar added, sugar free, suitable for diabetics or reduced glycemic load.
Side Effects and Warnings of Polydextrose
Polydextrose is a relatively safe fibre supplement. However, it can cause some minor side effects such as cramping, bloating, laxative effects and even gas in some users.
Users are advised to follow usage instructions and also consult with their doctor before using it as a dietary supplement.
