Pomegranate
What is Pomegranate?Pomegranate represents another of the foods recently touted for its health benefits. Pomegranates which are native to the Middle East are packed with healthy anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. In ancient times, the pomegranate was used as a contraceptive and as a substance to cause miscarriages.
The health benefits attributed to the consumption of Pomegranate and its extracts are related to their antioxidant activity. Studies have shown the inverse relationship between the intake of Pomegranate extracts (or its juice) and cardiovascular diseases.
It seems like pomegranates are claimed to be useful for just about everything. People have claimed that pomegranates are beneficial for treating or preventing the following conditions:
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Congestive heart failure (CHF)
- High cholesterol and Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
- Parasitic infections
- HIV or AIDS
- Obesity and diabetes
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Impotence and many more uses.
Pomegranate extracts may have benefits on prevention of certain diseases induced by bacterial diseases. Low dose of pomegranate extract concentration was found to delay Staphylococcus aureus growth, while high doses even eliminated Staphylococcus aureus growth.
Side Effects and Warnings of Pomegranate
Although many people will typically not experience any significant problems when consuming pomegranates, side effects are still possible. One of the possible side effects of pomegranates is an allergic reaction.
Even if you have consumed pomegranates before, it is still possible to have an allergic reaction to them. Because these reactions can become life threatening, make sure to contact your healthcare provider right away if you are experiencing any signs of an allergic reaction.
