Rhodiola

What is Rhodiola?

Rhodiola use dates back thousands of years. In 77 A.D., the Greek physician Dioscorides documented the medical applications of the plant, which he then called rodia riza, in his classic medical text De Materia Medica.

Since then it has been used to strengthen the nervous system, fight depression, enhance immunity, elevate the capacity for exercise, enhance memory, aid weight reduction, increase sexual function and improve energy levels

For people who suffer from neurological disorders, rhodiola rosea may be able to offer the comfort needed to enjoy day-to-day living. The herb acts as a muscle relaxant and also regulates blood flow.

For those who suffer from fibromyalgia, rhodiola rosea regulates the adrenal glands which may not be producing enough cortisol. Rhodiola rosea is used to help the adrenal gland slow down and secrete enough cortisol for the entire day. This helps a person who is suffering from fibromyalgia to sleep through the night and function normally.

Rhodiola has been used as an ingredient in various products which deal with:

  • Strengthening the immune system,
  • Treating depression and stress,
  • Assist in enhancing memory,
  • Muscle recovery and
  • Cardiac problems

Other Rhodiola benefits include its ability to improve hearing, to regulate blood sugar levels for diabetics and protect the liver from environmental toxins. It has been shown to activate fat breakdown and mobilise lipids from a dipose tissue to the natural fat burning system of your body for weight reduction.

Side Effects and Warnings of Rhodiola

The side effects of this Rhodiola include irritability, restlessness, and insomnia.

People who suffer from psychological disorders such as bi-polar disorder should not take it. Rhodiola rosea can cause mood swings and hallucinations. This could be very serious, depending how severe the bi-polar disorder is.

Women who are pregnant should not take rhodiola rosea as it can cause anxiety in some women. This can have negative effects on the baby. People with allergies should also avoid this and other herbs in general.

You should always consult your doctor before you start using Rhodiola as a supplement.
