Synephrine
What is Synephrine?Synephrine is the main active compound found in the fruit of a plant called Citrus aurantium. In traditional Chinese medicine, this plant is also known as Zhi Shi. In other parts of the world it is known as green orange, sour orange or bitter orange.
Synephrine is similar in chemical composition to ephedrine and pseudo-ephedrine and as such will be found in many weight loss and energy giving supplements.
Synephrine is used in diet pills as a metabolic enhancer, and is commonly found in many fat burners, thermogenic products, and appetite suppressing formulas. Synephrine acts as a stimulant in the body, and helps to break down fat while it shifts the adrenaline system into high gear. Synephrine will be found in dietary supplements that help to:
- Stimulate fat metabolism
- Suppress the appetite
- Create a sense of well-being
- Increase energy, often providing a ‘rush' similar to caffeine
- Increase caloric expenditure
Synephrine is an amphetamine-like substance that creates a similar reaction in the body as ephedrine.
Side Effects and Warnings of Synephrine
Since synephrine acts as a stimulant in the body, it is not a good match for people who are sensitive to caffeine, and those who have history of heart problems, high blood pressure, and even thyroid problems.
It is extremely important that you consult your doctor when you take this product. Some of the side effects may be life threatening thus caution is essential for your overall health. Some of the more common side effects include:
- Rapid increases in blood pressure
- Cardiac arrhythmias
- Flushing of the skin
- Restlessness, Hostility or agitation
- Sweating and Respiratory problems
- Dizziness, tremors or headaches
- Extremely low blood sugar and blood sugar imbalances
Even though it is derived from fruit, it is powerful enough to create a significant change in the body which may or may not lead to weight loss. You should only take such supplements under strict supervision of your doctor or avoid them all together.
