The Different Strokes in Swimming

Nothing gives as much pleasure as entering a swimming pool on a hot day and exercising all the fat from your body. Swimming is both relaxing and a great way to improve your physical fitness. Other than the mandatory need to know how to float on water, there are 4 different strokes in swimming. The freestyle, backstroke, break stroke and butterfly.

The freestyle stroke is probably the first stroke that every swimmer learns. It is also known as the front stroke. It is very easy; you swim on your stomach with your arms around in a forward pinwheel motion while your legs are doing a flutter kick at the same time. The person swimming should kick his legs in the same way as if using a pair of fins. For the best results, the feet do not have to come out of the water since propulsion is by hitting the water.

The backstroke is just the opposite of the free style. However, the backstroke is swum on your back with the arms moving in a backward pinwheel motion. The feet are also doing a flutter kick along with your arms. The head should always be pointed upward to the sky with the hands moving alternatively from the thighs to the ears. One of the best backstroke drills is placing a plastic donut in the head. If this does not fall off, then you are probably doing the backstroke the right way.

The breaststroke is swum on your stomach, with your arms moving around in a circular motion out in front of you, while your legs are doing a frog kick at the same. The is done by letting the arms push the water downward while the legs get sideward. Using a pull buoy to let the arms do the work while the legs are closed is probably a good practise.

Some people say the butterfly is the easiest stroke to learn but your endurance levels must be very high. It is swum on your stomach, with your arms moving around in a circular motion out in front of you, while your legs are doing a frog kick at the same time.

Learning any of the strokes is an art in itself. Very few swimmers can claim to be expert in all the swimming strokes. The idea however is not to be an expert in all of them but to do them well enough to be able to get the benefits of a great swimming workout.
