The Digestive System
The human digestive system is a series of organs and glands that breaks down the food we eat into smaller molecules that it can process. It is also used to excrete waste products. The digestive system is a long, twisting tube that runs from the mouth to the anus, plus a few other organs that produce or store digestive chemicals.
The digestive process starts in the mouth where the food is broken down. It then moves into the stomach through the esophagus. In the stomach it is partly digested and mixed with stomach acid before moving into the small intestine.
The partially digested food is then passed into the large intestine where more digestion of the food is done. At the end of the process, waste is stored in the rectum until it is excreted from the body.
The work of the digestive system is to break down the food into molecules that are then used for the body’s processes.
