Vanadium

What is Vanadium?

Vanadium is a trace mineral that is needed by the human body in small amounts. It is commonly found in vegetables and seafood. Vanadium is widely found in nature in the form of minerals, as well as in living matter, such as the human body.

Vanadium plays a role in cellular metabolism, the formation of bones and teeth, reproduction, and growth. It also inhibits cholesterol synthesis. Vanadium may help maintain healthy glucose and lipid metabolism.

Vanadium inhibits cholesterol formation in the blood vessels. It is believed to be involved in energy production, a cofactor of enzymes to accelerate chemical reactions in the body, participation in blood sugar and fat metabolism, and in helping build bones and teeth.

The main benefits of Vanadium include:

  • Vanadium is active in many chemical reactions that take place in the body.
  • Vanadium may help maintain healthy glucose and lipid metabolism.
  • It helps in preventing heart attacks due to inhibition of the formation of cholesterol.
  • It also assists with many other chemical reactions and processes in the body for good health.

Research on vanadium has focused on its role in improving or mimicking insulin action. Supplementation has demonstrated improvements in glucose tolerance, inhibition of cholesterol synthesis, and improved mineralization of bones and teeth.

Vanadium supplements are not as necessary since most diets are enough to fill your need for this mineral. However, there are certain cases and conditions when vanadium supplements are prescribed.

Side Effects and Warnings of Vanadium

There is not a lot of evidence on vanadium's toxicity although it's known to be highly toxic. However, large amounts of Vanadium can cause Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps and green tongue.

Those with diabetes or hyperglycaemia are cautioned not to use supplemental vanadium to manage their diabetes or hyperglycaemia. Those with hypoglycaemia should avoid using vanadium supplements.

You should always consult your doctor before using Vanadium as a dietary supplement.
