Was Pele the Greatest Footballer of all Time
In 1958 in the World Cup in Sweden, a 17 year old average built lad scored one of the greatest goals ever seen. The world had been introduced to Pele, the greatest footballer of all time. In Brazil they had come to know him when he was sixteen years of age and scored a goal in his very first game!
Edson Arantes Do Nascimento is his name. Waldemar de Brito, one of Brazil’s premier players brought Pele to the directors of Santos when he was 15 years old. He declared to the disbelieving directors “This boy will be the greatest football player in the world”. How true he was. At age the age of 16, Pele was the top scorer in Brazil.
Pele’s achievements are nearly impossible to even consider in modern day football. He joined the national team at age 16. He was so good in the 1962 world cup, that wealthy European teams were offering record figures to have him play for them. The Brazilian government to counter that declared that Pele was an official “national treasure” thus preventing him from being transferred out of the country. This will probably never happen to another football player anytime soon.
Great football players capture the imagination of all. Few humans, let alone footballers could do that like Pele. Pele was so good, that he is the only person known who actually made a civil war be postponed because someone was coming. In 1967, the two factions in the Nigerian Civil War agreed to a 48 hour ceasefire just to watch him play an exhibition match in Lagos.
The game of football would be nothing without Pele. His statistics are just impossible to comprehend. He has scored 92 hat tricks. Scored 97 international goals. He scored a memorable 127 goals for Santos in 1959, 110 in 1961 and 101 goals in 1965. Today’s player will be considered great if they scored 30 goals in a season. Perhaps the record that may never be broken is his 1,280 goals in 1,360 games. Though Arthur Freidenreich has the record at 1,329 goals, Pele’s goal scoring rate is about 1 goal per game. This includes international matches at 93 international matches and 97 goals.
Other than the record, it was the ease at which he confused defenders. He made playing football look easy and beautiful. There have been many players who were great. Maradona, Best, Cryuff, Cristiano Ronaldo, to name a few but there will only be one Pele. The greatest footballer in history.
