Wrist Extensors
Wrist extensors are also known as the outer or back forearm or hand extensors.
Anatomy of the Wrist Extensors
Wrist extensors are made up of eight heads that perform different functions. These are
- Extensor Digitorum,
- Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus,
- Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis,
- Extensor Carpi Ulnaris,
- Extensor Indicis,
- Extensor Digiti Minimi,
- Extensor Pollicis Longus, and
- Extensor Pollicis Brevis,
Wrist extensors will normally attach to the humerus, ulna or the radius. They also insert into the fingers, thumb, and metacarpals.
Functions of the Wrist Extensors
Wrist extensors function to help in the movement of:
- The wrist - through extension and abduction,
- The fingers - through extension and abduction,
- The thumb - through extension, and
- The elbow - through extension though very weak.
Extension refers to straightening the joint resulting in an increase of angle. For example, moving the back of the hand towards the back of the forearm.
Abduction refers to movement either toward or away from the midline of the body. For Example, moving the thumb side of the hand toward the lateral side of the forearm.
