Zeaxanthin
What is Zeaxanthin?Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid that makes up the central part of our eyes’ retina. It is also found in green leafy vegetables and in carrots and egg yolk. This pigment is what gives them their yellowish/reddish colour.
It is primarily found in eggs and green leafy vegetables - spinach, asparagus, cabbage, lettuce, green apples, beans, green peas, and Brussels sprouts. While these foods can do contain Zeaxanthin and other carotenoids helpful for eye sight, most people do not consume enough of them in their diet.
Zeaxanthin helps protect the eye from ultra-violet (UV) damage, and prevents free-radical damage to the retina and the lens of the eye that is associated with diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma.
A recent study indicates that zeaxanthin benefits include a reduced risk of ovarian cancer. There is, as yet, no complete explanation, but it has been shown that low blood levels of micronutrients are connected to an increased incidence of ovarian cancer.
Side Effects and Warnings of Zeaxanthin
There have been no toxic reactions associated with zeaxanthin consumption, although it is strongly recommended that smokers avoid all carotenoid supplements. You should always consult your doctor before using this or any other dietary supplements.
